05The guide

Generative fill, explained

What AI generative fill is for

Generative fill is AI inpainting: you mark an area of a photo and the AI paints new pixels into it, matched to the light, colour and texture around it. People use this AI photo fill to replace a sign with a plain wall, put a vase of flowers on an empty table, close a gap left by something they took out, or continue grass, sand or water into an area that needs more of it.

It works like content-aware fill, but instead of only borrowing pixels from elsewhere in the photo, the AI can paint things that were never there. Describe what you want, or leave the description empty and it fills the area with more of the surroundings.

How to fill an image with AI in CutLift

The area to fill is a layer. Make it with any selection tool: lasso it, paint it with the Brush, or click an object with AI select (Pro). Then choose Edit ▸ Generative fill…, or start it from the layer’s context menu or the Remove Object options bar.

Type what should appear, for example “a vase of yellow tulips”, and press Generate 3 variations. Pick the version that fits best, or press Generate again for a fresh set. The Seed field and its dice button change the starting point of each set. When you apply, the fill becomes one photo edit you can undo.

Tips for a better AI photo fill

Select a little more than the thing you are replacing, so its shadow and outline go too. Keep descriptions short and concrete: name the object, its colour and its material rather than writing a whole scene. If a set looks wrong, generate another before rewriting the words, since every variation is different.

To simply erase something, Remove object (J) is quicker and works on any device. After a fill, the Healing Brush and Clone Stamp tidy small seams, and Curves or Hue/Saturation can nudge the colour of the new area.

Requirements, price and privacy

This inpainting tool runs on your own device inside the browser, so the photo is never sent to a server. It is a CutLift Pro feature: use it free while you edit, and download the result with Pro ($7.99 a month or $47.99 a year) or your account’s one free premium download. It needs a recent Chrome or Edge on a computer with graphics card acceleration; on other browsers the window says so and points you to Remove object. Each variation takes a few seconds on a fast graphics card and longer on slower ones.
