  • ReconstructRPaint to gradually restore the original.
  • SmoothEPaint to even out ripples in the warp.
  • Twirl ClockwiseCHold to twirl clockwise. Alt twirls anticlockwise.
  • PuckerSHold to pull pixels towards the centre of the brush.
  • BloatBHold to push pixels away from the centre of the brush.
  • Push LeftODrag up to push pixels left, down to push right.
  • Freeze MaskFPaint to protect areas from changes.
  • Thaw MaskDPaint to remove the protection.

05The guide

Liquify with a light hand

What Liquify is good for

Liquify moves pixels instead of changing their colour, like pushing wet paint. Photographers use it for small corrections: smoothing a bulge in a shirt, straightening a wobbly line, tidying a hairline or the outline of a product. It is also a playful photo warp tool for caricatures, a twirl effect or big cartoon eyes. Open it from Filter ▸ Liquify… and the photo opens in its own workspace.

The brushes, one key each

Forward Warp (W) pushes pixels along with the brush. Pucker (S) pulls them towards the centre and the Bloat tool (B) pushes them outwards for as long as you hold. Twirl Clockwise (C) spins the area, with Alt for anticlockwise, and Push Left (O) shifts pixels sideways as you drag up or down. Smooth (E) evens out ripples and Reconstruct (R) paints the original back.

The brush has Size, Density, Pressure and Rate, and Pen pressure can be switched on for a tablet. A large brush with low pressure gives the most natural way to reshape a photo. Work in several light strokes rather than one long drag, and use Fit on screen to judge the shape at normal size.

Protecting what must not move

Freeze Mask (F) paints a red overlay over anything that should stay put, such as an eye next to a cheek you are reshaping, or a straight wall beside a figure. Thaw Mask (D) removes it, and Thaw all clears everything. The Freeze menu can also protect a whole layer, or everything outside one, so a cutout made with Select subject becomes an instant mask for a face warp or a body edit.

Checking and applying the warp

Show mesh draws the warp grid so you can see exactly what moved, and Show original as backdrop lets you compare against the untouched photo. Restore all starts again. With Warp layers too switched on, cutout layers follow the warp so they stay on the object. Press OK to apply the warp as one step you can undo. Liquify online in CutLift is free and runs on your device.
